The serious operator, who had rigs like the Cobra 148 GTL-DX, Superstar 360-FM, or the Tristar 777, needed an antenna to cover all the channels. This apparently was the answer!
.
At over 100" in length, with a VSWR curve flatter than the tail of a beaver, and the power handling to take anything you could throw at it, the 1/4 Wave Whip delivered the goods every time. It was also available as a two section antenna, which can be seen here.
.
Although sources say you would get strange looks as you drove down the road, twanging of every branch in the street, you knew that there was no better way of getting you signal to the outside world.
.
Only held on by the mightiest magnetic mount, with the grip not unlike that of a baby biting on your finger, or a gutter mount done up tight with the strength of He-Man, this antenna would whistle loudly, and was not for the faint hearted.
.
Shakespeare made a white Fiberglass whip which really stood out, and was even noisier at high speed, but the performance was no better than the cheaper stainless steel 1/4 Wave Whip.
