The Big Bopper-Richard or just plain "Bopper" to those who knew him, could always be heard laughing and joking with somebody, somewhere on Channel!
He was notorious for winding up people, especially truck drivers!
I remember an incident when he was round at my house in Wootton Bassett, and we were talking with people in Scotland on UK FM.
People were asking Richard if he would QSL with them...but his VERY insistent reply was;
"I am very sorry I don't QSL, but I will send you a stick of rock from Swindon OK?"
The other stations in Scotland were gobsmacked...but most of them agreed to the terms of exchanging sticks of rock instead of QSL Cards.
I remember going to see a chap called Phil in Salisbury in a Metro that belonged to Bopper, we had two seven foot firesticks on the roof of the car, and must have looked a right pair driving along!!
Then came his red RS Turbo Ford Escort, complete with the same antennas on the roof, complimented with a little purchase he made from me back in about 1993!! You could certainly hear him then!!
