The little gadget you see above you was for reading your VSWR, and relative field strength from your antenna, as well as providing some degree of tuning should your antenna have a slightly high VSWR.
The matcher feature was particularly useful for those who were unable to get to the antenna easily, or for when the rain got in the antenna!
The field strength feature was particularly useful for checking the radiation pattern from your antenna.
You could orbit your Ford Cortina with this meter in hand and see where the radiation was weakest, and then adjust the magnetic mount so that you had good omni-directional radiation.
Ironically, it always seemed to be best in the middle of the roof.... exactly where the antenna manufacturer recommended it to go in the first place!!
