If you spoke to him, he would send you his QSL card to confirm the contact.
In 1981 Bill spoke with Green Bean-Dave from Malmesbury, and here is his QSL card.
He would always be on a channel with lots of other people chatting away on one of his "Link Ups" and would be recognised instantly with his RA201 Reverb and his slightly slurred speech!
What a character Bill was, and I was fortunate enough to meet him and his wife when I was invited round after going to one of the Hackpen White Horse Club meetings.
