This antenna was my first silver rod style antenna, and was also the first antenna which enabled me to talk with GR20 [Mike Bombardier] from the "Royal" Forest of Dean, and allowed me to speak with GR00 [Ivor Ace Pilot] from Birdlip. This was only ground wave propagation! However, to me, in the early days, seemed like real DX!!
The Skipmaster 5/8 was manufactured from aluminium, and had 5 telescoping sections which were held together with jubilee clips.
.
To get the lowest SWR, and widest possible bandwidth, you would extend all the lower/widest sections out as long as you dared, and just adjust the top thin section for lowest SWR.
.
This antenna gave me lots of contacts during the Sporadic E season with Scotland, and Ireland, as well as numerous European contacts.
.
This antenna is still working well to this day, some 25 years on!!
