The arrival of the Freeman and Pardoe Thunderpole range sent CB shop tills whirring in the early 1980's.
.
If you click the picture above to enlarge the advert to full size, you will see claims that this antenna will give you 6dB gain or the equivalent to running 16 watts into your 1/4 wave antenna.
.
So, you paid your £25, and hurriedly installed it, only to find that the performance was actually the same as your Wot Pole that you had up originally!
.
The VSWR was pre-tuned on this antenna, so there was no need for any messing about.
.
Your mate who had a Thunderpole III told you "Just trim a couple of inches off your coax until you get 1:1"
.
Oh dear.....if we knew back then what we know now............

Yeah.... Thats basically a 1/2 wave dipole polarised vertically. A 1/2 wave dipole has ZERO gain.
Its alot like the AS Starduster sold here in the states back in the 1970s. One of the most hyped, overdone, antennas ever made.
The "Bandit" cartoon at the bottom of the add page is funny though!
