Arguably the biggest gimmick on the market was the "Ground Plane Kit" for the unwary.
Sold as a ground plane kit for your antenna, and promising improved reception, this little gimmick could be seen on many mirror mounted antennas up and down the highways of Britain!
For the wise, this fitted in "Series" with the inner [positive] side of your coaxial cable rather than the earth/braid [outer]
Sure, it gave the impression that your antenna was electrically longer than it actually was, but that's about all.
Upon closer inspection, these "loaded" ground plane legs were simply 100mm x 8mm aluminium bar, but that didn't stop you fitting one to the magmount on the roof of your Opel Manta Berlinetta though did it!!
