This mobile amplifier could be used either in the car or at home by suppling it with 12 Volts. The current drain on the battery was apparently amazing, with equally startling signal reports. Zetagi boasted that this box of gold could deliver up to 400 Watts on SSB and had a 25dB preamplifier as well!!
The Dream
"Excellent!" you thought.
"The preamp will drag in all those weak signals that I previously could not hear!"
The Reality
You now have a signal 5 of ignition noise from your MK 1 Fiesta, rather than signal 1!!
The Zetagi B300P was probably the root cause of most of the Olympic standard TVI found in your town or village in the early '80's. A few modifications to the skinny 12 Volt DC power leads which fed the amp, and some fettling with the internal wiring, made sure that you got all the power you could out of this baby...so a friend tells me!
"Your audio sounds like it has a warble" was a complaint you had quite frequently when using SSB with this amplifier.
"Hang on I'll start the engine" you'd reply.
"That's better" said the station you were talking to. Once the engine was running the complaint was no more!!
One day when you have been speaking with Dieter from Bavaria on Channel 36 mid block on your Cobra 148GTL-DX, you do not get the warbling warning because you are on FM!
You go to start the car.... but alas.............
It is amazing how, from that moment on, you park your car on a slight downward slope every time you go out to seek that rare DX!!
